The personal papers include files on specific actors; committee work, unions and associations; athletics; clippings and publications; festivals and workshops; financial records; the production company he founded, Portus Theatre Productions; school-related theatrical education materials; and a variety of other subjects. Correspondence includes letters to, from and about Renton and are primarily theatre-related. The scripts are ones Renton accumulated over his years as an actor, director, and producer.

Born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, Renton became a Canadian citizen in 1966. In the 1950s he performed at St. Martins Theatre in Melbourne, Australia and worked for the CBC in Toronto and as a lighting designer for shows such as Howdy Doody and Front Page Challenge . He became a member of Neptune Theatre's first company in 1963 and has since then performed in more than 100 plays there.
